AC Gas Refill UAE: Cost, Signs & When You Need It
“Your AC needs gas” is one of the most common things UAE residents are told when their cooling drops off, and also one of the most misunderstood. Refrigerant does not get “used up” like fuel, so if your system is low, it has leaked, and a refill alone is only half the job.
Here is what an AC gas refill actually involves in the UAE, how to tell if you genuinely need one, and what it should cost.
What “AC gas” really is
The gas is refrigerant – usually R410A or R32 in modern UAE units, or older R22 in systems over a decade old. It runs in a sealed loop, absorbing heat from your room and releasing it outside. Because the loop is sealed, a properly working AC never needs topping up. If the level has dropped, there is a leak somewhere, full stop.
Refilling without finding the leak is throwing money away. The new gas will leak out the same way, often within weeks. A proper job means locating and sealing the leak first, then recharging to the manufacturer-specified weight.
Signs your AC may be low on refrigerant
- Cooling is weak even though the unit runs constantly
- Ice or frost forming on the copper pipes or indoor coil
- A hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor unit
- Higher than usual DEWA, SEWA or FEWA bills
- The outdoor unit runs but the air inside never gets properly cold
These overlap with other faults (dirty filters, a failing compressor, a blocked condenser), which is exactly why a diagnosis matters before anyone adds gas.
What a proper refill costs in the UAE
Be wary of a flat “AED X for a gas refill” quote over the phone – it usually skips the leak repair. A correct job is priced as: leak diagnosis, leak repair, vacuum, then recharge by weight. The total depends on where the leak is and the refrigerant type. We give a fixed written quote after diagnosis so you know the full cost before any work begins.
Refrigerant handling in the UAE must be done by a trained technician with proper gauges and a vacuum pump – it is not a DIY job, and a bad recharge can destroy the compressor.

Frequently asked questions
How often should AC gas be refilled?
Never, if there is no leak. A sealed system holds its charge for the life of the unit. If you are refilling regularly, you have an unrepaired leak.
Can I refill AC gas myself?
No. In the UAE refrigerant work requires a trained technician, proper gauges and a vacuum pump. A wrong charge damages the compressor and is unsafe.
How long does a refill take?
Once any leak is repaired, evacuating and recharging takes about 45 to 90 minutes depending on the system.
