Why Does My AC Smell Bad? Causes and How to Fix It
When your AC blows a musty, sour or burning smell into the room, it is telling you something specific. In the UAE’s heat and humidity, AC smells are common – and the fix depends entirely on which smell you have.
Musty or damp smell – mould in the unit
The most common one. Humidity collects on the evaporator coil and in the drain pan, and in the UAE climate it never fully dries, so mould and bacteria grow. The smell hits when the AC starts. The fix is a proper deep clean of the coil, drain pan and drain line – not just a filter rinse.
Prevent it: run the fan-only mode for 10 minutes after cooling to dry the coil, rinse filters monthly, and book a coil deep-clean each pre-summer service.
Sour or “dirty sock” smell
A stronger version of the mould problem – heavy bacterial growth on a coil that has not been serviced in a long time. It needs a professional coil treatment to fully clear.
Burning or electrical smell – switch it off
Treat this as urgent. A burning or hot-plastic smell can mean overheating wiring, a failing fan motor or a capacitor problem. Switch the AC off at the breaker and call a technician – do not keep running it, as overheated wiring is a fire risk.
Other smells
- Rotten egg smell: possibly a dead pest inside the unit or ducting, or a drainage/plumbing issue – needs inspection.
- Chemical or sweet smell: can indicate a refrigerant leak; have it checked.
