A healthy dryer makes a steady, low tumble – nothing more. The moment it starts squealing, grinding, thumping or rattling, a part is wearing out or something is loose. The good news is that the type of noise tells you a lot about the cause, and catching it early usually means a cheap repair instead of an expensive one.

What each noise usually means

Squealing or high-pitched noise

A squeal almost always comes from a worn idler pulley or a worn drive belt – the bearing in the tension pulley dries out and screeches. Worn drum glides (the pads the drum front slides on) can squeal too. Left alone, a squealing pulley eventually seizes and stops the drum, so it is worth acting on early.

Grinding or rumbling

A deep grinding or rumbling that gets louder as the drum turns points to worn drum rollers or bearings. These support the drum, and as they wear they grind – and eventually make the drum hard to turn. This is one of the most common dryer noises we are called out for.

Thumping or banging

A rhythmic thump often means a worn drum support or roller has developed a flat spot, or the load is unbalanced with a heavy item like a bunched towel. It can also be a new dryer that has not settled or one that is not level.

Rattling

A rattle is frequently something simple – coins, a button or a zip pull loose in the drum or caught in the lint area – but it can also be a loose screw or a failing part. Always check for foreign objects first.

Scraping

A scraping sound can be the drum rubbing where a seal or glide has worn, or an object lodged between the drum and the casing. This needs checking before it damages the drum.

What you can safely check yourself

• Check for loose objects. With the dryer cool and off, feel around the drum and lint area for coins, clips or a stray button.
• Check the load. A single heavy, bunched item causes thumping – redistribute it and try again.
• Check it is level. A dryer that rocks on an uneven floor bangs and vibrates; adjust the feet so it sits firmly.
• Note the type of noise – squeal, grind, thump, rattle – so you can tell the technician; it often means they arrive with the right part.

What you should not do is keep running a dryer that is grinding – a worn roller or bearing left to run can damage the drum and turn a small part into a big repair.
