Gas Oven Igniter Not Working? Causes and Fixes

Your gas oven clicks or glows but the burner never lights, so the oven stays cold. A failing igniter is the most common reason a gas oven will not heat – but because this is gas, safety comes first. Here is how the ignition works, what causes it to fail, and the checks that are safe to do yourself.

How gas oven ignition works

Most modern gas ovens use a glow-bar igniter, not a spark. When you set the oven, the igniter heats up and glows bright orange. As it draws current it also opens the gas safety valve, and the gas that flows out is lit by the glowing igniter. The key point: the igniter has to get hot enough to open that valve. As it ages and weakens, it may still glow but no longer pull enough current to open the valve – so you get a glow, but no flame and no heat.

Common reasons a gas oven will not ignite

1. A weak or failed glow-bar igniter (most common)

The igniter weakens with age and thermal cycling. A weak one glows but takes too long, or never gets hot enough to open the safety valve. A failed one does not glow at all. Either way the oven does not light. This is the number-one cause and a routine replacement for a technician.

2. A faulty gas safety valve

If the valve itself fails, it will not open even with a healthy igniter, so no gas reaches the burner. It needs testing and replacing by a qualified technician.

3. No gas supply

An empty cylinder, a closed valve, or an issue on the gas line means nothing to ignite. If your gas hob also will not light, the supply is the problem, not the oven.

4. A spark-ignition or control fault

On spark-ignition models, a failed spark electrode, ignition module or control board stops the burner lighting. These are electrical-plus-gas faults for a technician.

5. A dirty or misaligned burner

Food debris, grease or a burner that has been knocked out of position can stop the flame catching or spreading. A clean and correct alignment often restores it.

What you can safely check yourself

• Check the gas supply. Make sure the cylinder is not empty and the supply valve is open. Test whether your gas hob lights – if it does not either, it is a supply issue.
• Watch the igniter (with the oven set to bake): a healthy one glows bright orange within a minute. A weak orange glow that never lights, or no glow at all, points to the igniter.
• Check the burner is not obviously blocked by spilled food, once the oven is cool and off.

Beyond that, gas oven repairs are strictly a job for a qualified technician – do not replace the igniter, open the gas valve, or test gas components yourself.
