Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry? Causes and Fixes

Your dryer runs a full cycle and the clothes come out still damp, so you run it again – and again. A dryer that takes too long is not just annoying; it wastes electricity and, if the cause is airflow, it can be a genuine fire risk. The good news is that the most common cause is something you can fix yourself in five minutes.

Why drying time matters (and why airflow is everything)

A dryer works by heating air, blowing it through the tumbling clothes to pick up moisture, and then getting that wet air out – vented outside, or condensed back to water in a condenser or heat-pump model. The whole system depends on good airflow. Restrict the air anywhere and the dryer cannot shift the moisture, so cycles drag on, the machine runs hot, and lint can build up dangerously.

Common reasons a dryer takes too long

1. A clogged lint filter (the number-one cause)

Lint blocks the filter after every load. A clogged filter chokes the airflow, so drying times balloon and the dryer overheats. This is the most common cause by far – and the easiest fix.

2. A blocked or kinked vent hose (vented dryers)

On a vented dryer, the hose carrying moist air outside clogs with lint or kinks behind the machine. Blocked venting is the top cause of long drying times after the filter – and a serious fire hazard, so it needs clearing.

3. A full condenser or heat exchanger (condenser and heat-pump dryers)

Condenser and heat-pump dryers have a heat exchanger and a water tank instead of a vent. If the exchanger clogs with fine lint or the water tank is full, the dryer cannot condense moisture and drying slows right down.

4. Overloading

A packed drum cannot tumble freely, so air does not reach all the clothes and nothing dries evenly. Splitting a big wash into two loads is often faster than forcing it into one.

5. A weak or failing heating element

If the heating element is partly failed, the dryer tumbles but does not get hot enough, so clothes dry slowly or come out cool and damp. This is a technician repair.

6. A faulty moisture sensor

Auto-sensing dryers use a moisture sensor to decide when clothes are dry. If it is coated in fabric-softener residue or has failed, it may stop the cycle too early – leaving clothes damp – or run far too long.

What you can safely check yourself

• Clean the lint filter before every single load – the most important habit for fast, safe drying.
• Check and clear the vent hose (vented dryers) – make sure it is not kinked, crushed or clogged with lint.
• Empty the water tank and clean the condenser filter (condenser/heat-pump dryers) after each use.
• Do not overload – leave room for the clothes to tumble.
• Wipe the moisture sensor (usually two metal strips inside the drum) with a little vinegar to remove softener residue.
