Dryer Not Spinning? Causes and How to Fix It

You start the dryer, you can hear it humming, but the drum just sits there and your clothes come out cold and wet – or it will not start at all. A dryer that will not spin is a common fault, and the cause is usually one of a handful of mechanical parts. Here is how to tell what is wrong and what you can safely check yourself.

Why won’t my dryer spin?

Inside a dryer, the motor turns the drum using a long rubber belt that wraps around it, held tight by a spring-loaded pulley. The drum sits on rollers or bearings that let it turn smoothly. When the drum will not spin, it is almost always because that belt, the rollers, the motor, or a safety switch has failed – not because the whole machine is finished.

Common reasons a dryer will not spin

1. A broken or worn drive belt (most common)

The rubber drive belt stretches, cracks and eventually snaps after years of heat and use. When it breaks, the motor still runs and you hear it humming, but the drum does not turn. A snapped or slipping belt is the single most common cause of a dryer that will not spin, and it is a routine replacement for a technician.

2. Worn drum rollers or bearings

The drum rides on rollers (or bearings). When these wear or seize, the drum becomes hard to turn – the belt may slip or the motor may not have the strength to spin it. You will often have heard a rumbling or grinding noise for a while beforehand.

3. A failed door switch

A dryer will not run unless it knows the door is shut. If the door switch fails, the machine thinks the door is open and will not start at all – no hum, no spin. This is a common and inexpensive fault.

4. A worn idler pulley

The idler pulley keeps the belt tensioned. When its bearing wears, it squeals and eventually the belt slips or the pulley seizes, stopping the drum. It is usually replaced together with the belt.

5. A motor or capacitor fault

If the motor itself fails, or the start capacitor (on some models) weakens, the drum will not turn and you may hear a hum or a click as it tries. This is a technician repair.

6. Simply overloaded

A drum packed too full can be too heavy for the motor to turn, especially with wet, heavy items. This one you can fix in seconds by taking half the load out.

What you can safely check yourself

• Reduce the load. Take out half the washing and try again – an overloaded drum will not spin.
• Check the door. Make sure it clicks firmly shut; if the machine will not start at all, a failed door switch is likely.
• Listen. A motor humming with no drum movement points to a broken belt or seized drum; total silence points to the door switch, a fuse or power.
• Check power. Confirm the socket and breaker are fine by testing another appliance.
• Give it a reset. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then try again to clear any minor electronic fault.

What you should not do is open the dryer casing to change the belt or motor yourself – there are sharp edges, tensioned parts and mains wiring inside, and it is a quick job for a technician.
