Dishwasher Not Draining? Causes and Fixes

You open the dishwasher at the end of a cycle and there is a pool of dirty water sitting in the bottom. It is one of the most common dishwasher faults we are called out for in Sharjah and Dubai – and the good news is that a lot of the time you can trace the cause yourself in a few minutes.

Why won’t my dishwasher drain?

At the end of every cycle your dishwasher pumps the dirty water down through a filter, into a drain pump, and out through a drain hose. If anything blocks that path – or the pump fails – the water has nowhere to go and sits in the bottom of the tub. So standing water almost always means a blockage or a pump problem, not a machine that has “died”.

Common reasons a dishwasher will not drain

1. A blocked filter (the number-one cause)

At the bottom of the tub is a removable filter that catches food debris. Over time it clogs with food, grease and – in the UAE especially – hard-water scale. A blocked filter is the single most common reason a dishwasher will not drain, and it is also the easiest to fix yourself.

2. A clogged or kinked drain hose

The drain hose carries the water out to your waste pipe. It can kink behind the machine or clog with grease and food sludge, especially where it is narrow or bends sharply. If the filter is clean but the water still will not go, the hose is the next suspect.

3. A failed drain pump

The drain pump is the motor that physically pushes the water out. If it burns out, jams on a piece of glass or a fruit stone, or its impeller breaks, the machine cannot drain even with a clear filter and hose. You will often hear a humming or grinding noise as it tries. This is a technician repair.

4. A blocked sump or food trap

Below the filter sits the sump – the low point where water collects before it is pumped out. Small debris, broken glass or a stray label can lodge here and block the outlet, and it needs opening up to clear.

5. Grease and hard-water build-up

Sharjah and Dubai’s hard water leaves scale throughout the machine, and grease from plates coats the drain path over months. Together they narrow the pipes and slow drainage until it stops. A hot maintenance wash helps, but a heavily scaled machine needs a proper clean-out.

6. A blocked waste connection

Sometimes the dishwasher is fine and the blockage is in the kitchen waste pipe it drains into, or in the connection under the sink. If your sink is also draining slowly, this is the likely culprit.

What you can safely check yourself

Before you call anyone, work through these – most standing-water problems are solved here:

• Clean the filter. Twist out the filter at the bottom of the tub, rinse it under a hot tap until the water runs clear, and clear any debris from the housing underneath. Refit it firmly.
• Scoop out the standing water first with a cup and a sponge so you can work.
• Check the drain hose at the back for obvious kinks, and make sure it is not crushed against the wall.
• Check the sink drainage. If the kitchen sink is slow too, the blockage is in the waste pipe, not the dishwasher.
• Run a short cycle after cleaning the filter to see if it drains normally.

What you should not do is force anything or start dismantling the pump – broken glass in a sump is a cut risk, and the pump and wiring need proper handling.
