Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes Properly? Here Is Why
You unload the dishwasher expecting sparkling plates and instead get grit, film or bits of food still stuck on. A dishwasher that runs but does not actually clean is one of the most frustrating faults – and in Sharjah and Dubai, hard water is very often part of the story.
Here is what stops a dishwasher cleaning properly, what you can fix yourself, and when it needs a technician.
How a dishwasher actually cleans
A dishwasher does not scrub – it sprays. It heats water, pumps it at pressure through spinning spray arms, and blasts your dishes while detergent breaks down grease. For that to work, the water has to be hot enough, the spray arms have to spin freely with clear jets, and the filter has to keep the water clean. If any one of those fails, you get dirty dishes.
Common reasons a dishwasher will not clean
1. Clogged spray-arm jets
The spray arms have small holes that direct water onto your dishes. In the UAE these clog with hard-water scale and food debris, so the spray weakens and whole sections of the rack get missed. Clogged spray arms are one of the most common causes we see.
2. Hard-water scale and film
That cloudy white film on glasses is limescale from Sharjah and Dubai’s hard water. Scale also builds up inside the machine, coating the heater and narrowing the jets, which slowly kills cleaning performance. Rinse aid and softener salt are essential here, not optional.
3. A blocked filter
If the filter is clogged, the dishwasher recirculates dirty, food-filled water and effectively re-deposits grime onto your dishes. A dirty filter makes everything come out worse than it went in.
4. Loading mistakes
Overloading, nesting bowls together, or tall items blocking the spray arm from spinning all leave shadows the water never reaches. It is not a fault, but it is a very common cause of “it is not cleaning” call-outs.
5. Water not hot enough
Dishwashers rely on hot water to dissolve grease and activate detergent. A failed heating element means the cycle runs cold, grease is never cut, and dishes come out greasy. This is a technician repair.
6. Old or wrong detergent
Detergent that has gone hard, the wrong type, or too little of it will not clean – and in hard-water areas you often need more than the pack suggests. Tablets stored in a humid UAE kitchen can clump and stop dissolving.
7. A weak wash pump
Separate from the drain pump, the wash pump is what pressurises the spray. If it weakens, the arms barely turn and cleaning drops off across the whole load.
What you can safely check yourself
- Clean the spray arms. Lift them out (most twist or unclip) and poke a toothpick through each jet to clear scale and debris, then rinse.
- Clean the filter at the bottom of the tub under a hot tap.
- Top up rinse aid and softener salt – the two biggest weapons against UAE hard-water film.
- Run a hot maintenance wash (empty) with a dishwasher cleaner or citric acid to strip scale and grease.
- Re-check your loading – make sure nothing blocks the spray arms from spinning freely.
- Use fresh detergent and the right amount for hard water.
When to call a technician
If dishes are still dirty after clearing the spray arms and filter, descaling and fixing your loading, the problem is mechanical – usually a failed heater (cold water), a weak wash pump, or a blocked internal water path. Our dishwasher repair team diagnoses and fixes these same-day across Sharjah and Dubai, with a fixed written quote first.
How to keep it cleaning well
- Always use rinse aid and softener salt in the UAE – they prevent the scale that ruins cleaning.
- Clean the filter and spray arms monthly.
- Run a hot cleaner cycle every month to strip grease and limescale.
- Scrape, do not pre-rinse – and do not overload.
Is it a habit or a fault?
The quickest way to tell whether your dishwasher needs a repair or just a change of routine: if cleaning improves noticeably after you clear the spray arms and filter, top up rinse aid and salt, and run a hot descaling wash, then it was maintenance and loading – keep those habits up. If dishes still come out dirty or greasy after all of that, the cause is mechanical, most often a failed heating element leaving the water cold or a weakening wash pump, and that needs a technician. There is no point buying stronger detergent to mask a hardware fault – a proper diagnosis is cheaper in the long run and gets your dishwasher genuinely clean again. Our technicians will always tell you honestly which of the two it is before you spend anything.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my dishes still dirty after a full cycle?
Usually clogged spray-arm jets, a dirty filter, hard-water scale, or water that is not heating. Clean the spray arms and filter and run a hot descaling wash first; if it persists, the heater or wash pump may have failed.
Why is there white film on my glasses?
That is limescale from Sharjah and Dubai’s hard water. Use rinse aid and refill the dishwasher softener salt, and run a monthly cleaning cycle to keep scale down.
Does hard water really affect my dishwasher?
Yes, significantly. UAE hard water scales up the jets, heater and pipes, which weakens spray pressure and cleaning over time. Regular softener salt and descaling are the main defences.
How much does it cost to repair a dishwasher that will not clean?
A diagnostic visit is AED 50, waived on repair. Cleaning and descaling is inexpensive; a heater or wash-pump replacement costs more, quoted in writing after diagnosis.
